Old Cabinets Or Dressers As Modern Bathroom Vanities
Highly functional contemporary bathroom furniture pieces such as the vanity is becoming an important bathroom fixture because of its ability to hold multiple items such as drawers, mirror and the sink. Unfortunately though, not every homeowner could afford a bathroom vanity especially in these tough economic times. However, if you really want to have a modern looking bath vanity and you have the creativity and patience to do DIY projects, then it's about time to dust off your old cabinet or dresser and make it your own vanity. Below are some simple steps that you could follow to start creating your homemade bath vanity.
Creating modern bathroom vanities from old dressers or cabinets, regardless if they are double sink or single sink vanities, requires few modifications. The materials you would be needing for this project includes a cabinet or dresser, saw, sink fixtures, pencil, plumbing fixtures, screws, sealant and paint, L-brackets, anchors, and drill. To get things started, measure the size of your cabinet in order to know the size and type of sink that you will use. If you want to save yourself from expenses, you could still use the sink that you are currently using in your bathroom. However, removing an old sink would only add extra work so it would be much better if you would just purchase a new one.
If you already have your sink, set it aside for a while because it will not be used during the initial stages of your project. Focus on your cabinet or dresser first; remove all the drawers from your furniture, and at the back of your cabinet cut out a hole big enough for you to properly slide the sink plumbing. As modern bathroom vanities are stand alone furniture pieces, it is necessary that the plumbing and the hole in your cabinet would correspond each other; hence, before you cut a hole on your cabinet, make sure to measure and mark the wall plumbing to avoid unnecessary modifications that could ruin your project. If you're done doing the holes, sand it off to achieve a smooth finish.
To copy the appearance of modern bathroom vanities, there are two ways to properly install your sink. First, if you're using a traditional sink or your old sink that sits flat on the counter, begin tracing the opening of the sink on the top of your cabinet, and then cut this opening with a jigsaw. For the second option, if you intend to use a bowl type of sink, read the instructions included in the sink package to be able to know what kind of hole you have to make in order to properly fit the plumbing, and then cut this out on the top of your cabinet. If you're through cutting, test fit the sink, drain fittings and plumbing connections to make sure that they appropriately suit each other.
After fitting, remove the sink first and paint your cabinet or dresser in accordance to your bath space's color scheme or depending on your preferred color. If there are some modifications that you have to attend to, be sure that you do them all before painting your cabinet and before your permanently position your sink. Once your cabinet is dry, start making holes on the wall where you will permanently attach your contemporary bathroom furniture, place the L-brackets and anchors that will support your vanity, and set your furniture on its right position. Then, you can now install your sink.
In order to properly place your sink on the cabinet, flip your sink over and place a sealant around its inside lip. After which, carefully lower it down to the vanity and remove sealant residue. Lastly, install the water supply lines. Your homemade modern bath vanity is now ready to use.
If you want to set a modern look for your bathroom, placing contemporary bathroom furniture can do the trick. Modern bathroom vanities are stand alone fixtures that could serve as the focal point bath spaces. However, as vanities can be a bit expensive, instead of buying one you may want to try making your own modern bath vanity. This project is easy to make that you can do it over the weekend and would also guarantee you to save money.
